What is Chiropractic

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord and all the nerves in the body.

The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain.  The moving bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body. Doctors call this the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Vertebral, meaning the bones of the spine. Subluxation, meaning less that a total dislocation. And Complex, meaning consisting of more than one part.

Chiropractic is the science of locating offending spinal structures, the art of reducing their impact to the nervous system and the philosophy of all things natural.

Spinal misalignments / fixations which produce irritation of nerves, or impinge them are called subluxations. A minor subluxation may occur from the ordinary, everyday stresses and strains of normal living, even from such simple acts as twisting or turning. If left unattended, it may become chronic, resulting in severe, painful conditions.

A fall or injury often causes major subluxations. They can be produced by any type of shock that overloads the nervous system’s protective mechanism. Even the unavoidable and ever-present downward pull of gravity on the upright body often overcomes body balance and produces poor posture, and misalignment of the spinal vertebrae may result. Abnormal function of cells, tissues, and organs may be caused by the ensuing nerve irritation produced by this condition of subluxation. A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, locked up, or not moving properly.

This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and improved health. Like a finely tuned instrument, your spine needs regular adjustments. Your spine is used 24 hours per day and is subjected to many physical, emotional and postural stresses, to name a few. Left untreated, these stresses can build-up and lead to stiffness, misalignment and pain.Be kind to your spine, contact our office to arrange for a consultation to see if you can benefit from chiropractic care.
